What is Form 1099-DA?

Form 1099s are used to report non-employment income (income you receive outside of your job) to the IRS. You may have received forms like Form 1099-B in the past to report gains and losses from stocks.

Form 1099-DA (Digital Asset) is a new tax form designed specifically to help taxpayers report gains and losses from cryptocurrencies and other digital assets. Beginning in 2026, certain crypto brokers will be required to issue Form 1099-DA to users for all capital gains and losses. When you receive a Form 1099-DA or another 1099 form, an identical copy is filed with the IRS.

If you disposed of cryptocurrency through a centralized exchange in 2025, you should receive Form 1099-DA in early 2026.

Does CoinLedger provide Form 1099-DA?

CoinLedger is not a broker or cryptocurrency exchange, and therefore we do not issue Form 1099-DA (or any other 1099). Brokers - such as crypto exchanges like Coinbase - are the entities legally required to file 1099 forms with both the taxpayer and the IRS. When you receive a 1099-DA from an exchange, an identical copy has already been sent directly to the IRS so they can verify that crypto activity is being reported correctly on your tax return.

Instead of issuing 1099s, CoinLedger consolidates your entire crypto transaction history across all wallets and exchanges into one place and generates IRS-compliant tax reports, such as the Form 8949.

When you import each of your crypto exchanges and wallets into CoinLedger, this process effectively replaces the need for individual exchange-level 1099s. You do not need to separately file your 1099-DA with the IRS - they already have it. Instead, you should file the Form 8949 provided by CoinLedger, and use your 1099-DA as a compliance check to confirm that the activity on your 8949 aligns with what the exchange reported on your 1099. You should also use your 1099-DA to ensure that you are generating your Form 8949 properly. Learn more here.

If you are a CoinLedger Done For You customer, our team will do this process for you. We will request your 1099-DA's from you so they can be used to validate that your proceeds on the 8949 match what was reported by your exchange.

It’s also important to note that for tax year 2026, the IRS does not require crypto exchanges to report cost basis on Form 1099-DA. As a result, these forms will be incomplete and may overstate your capital gains. This is why we strongly recommend using CoinLedger (or our Done For You service) to ensure that your cost basis was calculated accurately before filing your taxes.

Where can I find my 1099-DA?

You will receive a Form 1099-DA from each centralized exchange you used to dispose of crypto sometime in early 2026. Below is a helpful list of some known centralized exchanges that will be issuing Form 1099-DA in 2026, along with where to download this form.

CoinLedger cannot retrieve your 1099-DA on your behalf. Since we are not a broker, we are not required to provide Form 1099's to our customers. Contact these exchanges directly if you have any questions about this process.

  • Coinbase: By mid-February 2026, users should be able to download their 1099-DA from Coinbase in the Tax section of their account. This section can be found here: Coinbase Taxes.
